Marion the librarian went to her bookshelf to read volume 3 from one
of her 10-volume collections. When she pulled out the book, she
noticed that a bookworm had eaten his way straight through the book
from front cover to back cover. She immediately pulled out each of the
other nine volumes and sighed as she saw that the bookworm had eaten
straight through the collection from the front cover of volume 1 to
the back cover of volume 10.
Marion, being a good librarian, had the books in correct numerical order on the shelf. Each book was two inches thick including the front and back covers.
How many inches of book did the bookworm eat thru?

The Answer:
16 inches.
When a book is on a shelf, it's front cover faces right and it's back
cover faces left, as you face the shelf. Therefore, the worm eating
from the front cover of volume 1 to the back cover of volume 10 meant
he munched through the 16 inch span of the middle 8 books.
